One thing that’s really begun to bug me in recent weeks is the lack of online access for most of the main classical music and arts publications. Take Classical Music magazine in the UK - a publication I’ve always enjoyed reading - or the excellent Gig Magazine, a source of useful information on the arts scene in the UK and Ireland. Both of these exist in hard copy only with no option to access the content online. Why?
One would think that in 2009, the option of subscribing to these and other specialist music magazines would be available. It amazes me that despite the major changes in newspaper publishing these titles continue to rely on an old fashioned distribution model. Perhaps they continue to turn a profit from the subscriptions they have, but surely they could increase their readership if they offered an alternative online subscription? If they did then I for one would certainly pay.
